Local Area Attractions
Done the beach? Done the Golf? Looking for something else to do? Well, the local area has plenty to offer; here are some of the more popular attractions. Being the States parking is rarely a problem.
BUSCH GARDENS
This is the Gulf Coast's answer to the theme parks of Orlando and is about a 35 minute drive from the villa. It is part animal park and part theme park with some really wild roller coaster rides. Owned by the makers of Budweiser, the beer tent is worth a visit.... if you are not the driver. If you are visiting Orlando combined tickets are available with Sea World at a reduced rate. Makes for a full day out for all the family!
ADVENTURE ISLAND
The water park area of Busch Gardens is very similar to “Wet and Wild” with water slides, pools and a tubing area. Seasonal: closed in the "winter months". Once again discounted combination tickets are available.
SUNKEN GARDENS at St Petersburg
Sinkholes are a regular occurrence in Florida; the “Sunken Gardens” at St Petersburg are an oasis in that city with a relaxing stroll that takes about 2 hours. About a 45 minutes drive from the villa. Closed on Monday and Tuesday. Worth combining with a walk along “The Pier” at St Petersburg or Fort DeSoto beach.
HOMOSASSA SPRINGS
This makes for a nice afternoon out. About 30 minutes drive north of the villa on the US 19 will take you to the ticket and information centre. From here you can take a boat to the main area of the park or you can also take your car directly to the main entrance. The boat is recommended but the last one leaves at about 3.30pm in the winter. Outside of this time, there is a tractor and trailer service. Noted for its manatees it provides a refuge for those that have been injured by boats in the Gulf waters.
WEEKI WACHEE
The publicity gives the impression that it is on a similar scale to other theme parks; it is not. Its main claim to fame are the regular “mermaid” shows. It has become overshadowed by the other theme parks but the local county is taking it over and upgrading it to its former glory. Not far to go, at less than 30 minutes from the villa, and makes for a pleasant afternoon out.
TARPON SPRINGS
Greek community famous for its sponge divers. About 25 minutes away from the villa and is best combined with a trip to Fred Howard Park beach.
